Erich Kirchler completed his studies in psychology and anthropology in 1979 at the University of Vienna and his habilitation in 1989 in psychology at the University of Linz. Since 1992 he has been Professor of Applied Psychology (Business Psychology) at the Psychological Faculty of the University of Vienna as well as guest professor at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, and Senior Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies, Vienna. His research topics are financial decision making in private households and tax psychology.
